The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of written recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old cook books were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he tells us how the ancient chefs made use of many herbs and spices, including a few you will know like basil, rue and dill. During the following few hundred years, the families of Europe competed to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Barbecued Eggplant recipe.
