1/2 cup chopped onions
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup thinly sliced celery
3 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
5 cup water
1/2 cup barley
4 tsp vegtable broth powder
1/8 tsp garlic powder
Directions
Put vegtables in a large soup pot with a little water and cook for 5
min stirring frequently. Add remaining ingredients and bring to a
boil. Cover & reduce heat to low & simmer 1 hour. Nutrition (per

The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` far back into distant history, certainly as far into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a series of tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also tells us how the Romans made use of many different herbs, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, fennel and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an eruption in books on cooking, most of which are now in private cookery archives. The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
