The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of `recipes` back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. However, mostly, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he recounts how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, mint and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on food, most of which still exist in academic collections. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking books were in high demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The introduction of the TV brought us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
