The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient records were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Later on, there were two interesting books dating from the 14th Century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books have no connection with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich people of those days. For the next few years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
