The History of Recipes

We can track the history of written recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.

In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful.

Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, entrees and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius informs us how the ancient Romans used a wide range of spices and herbs, including some familiar names for example thyme, fennel and asafoetida.

Later on, there were two interesting books published in the 14th Century : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of meals eaten by the upper classes of that period.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the Middle-East, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs led to a surge in cookery books, many of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery books are in high demand, as a result of increased literacy, people having more free time and being a little richer.

The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site.
