The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving on, there were a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of that period. During the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the 1900s, cookery books were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and disposable income. |
