The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes far back into the distant past, at least as far as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, generally, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef tells us how the chefs of Roman times used many different herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, rue and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and herbs from the East, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an increase in recipe books, some of which are kept safe in academic collections. The arrival of television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
