The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existance of recipes way back into the distant past, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some stone tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have some interesting books which appeared in the 14th Century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and powerful. Over the next few hundred years, the wealthy families of Europe strove to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. When we get to the 1900s, recipe books were greatly in demand mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having more free time and being a little richer. The arrival of TV brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
