The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, rue and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to a surge in manuscripts on cooking, many of which still exist in private libraries. The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
