The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cook books were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of many different herbs, including many that are still in use today for example basil, fennel and asafoetida. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs led to a torrent in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are now in private collections. The introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
