The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into the far past, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. In practice though, in the main part, these old cook books were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also tells us how the cooks of his times used a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, mint and parsley. During the next few hundred years, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most extravagent banquests, and as a result cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Beer Batter Mix recipe.
