The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes back into distant history, in fact as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful. Moving on, we have some interesting books published in the fourteenth century - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books have no connection with the indian food that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and powerful. During the following few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books were greatly in demand as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased free time and being a little richer. The revolution that is television brought us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
