The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes way back into distant history, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. He recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius informs us how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many spices, including some that we all recognise like thyme, rue and parsley. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused an eruption in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in private libraries. The introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
