The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existance of recipes way back into the far past, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, sadly, these early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also tells us how the early Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, rue and parsley. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices caused an eruption in cookery books, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. By the arrival of the 1900s, cooking books are in high demand, mostly due to increased literacy, people having more leisure time and having more disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
