The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes far back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, generally, these early recipes were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef tells us how the ancient Romans used a wide range of spices, including some that we all recognise for example basil, mint and parsley. For the next few years, the powerful and rich houses tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes common in their social group. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
