The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also tells us how the ancient chefs used many aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example thyme, fennel and dill. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes common in their social group. The introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Brussel Sprouts Pasta recipe.
