The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed far back into the distant past, at least as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were separated into starters, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also describes how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different herbs and spices, including some familiar names such as bay, mint and asafoetida.

Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab cooking, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes was responsible for a torrent in recipe books, some of which still exist in private cookery archives.

The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site.
