The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes way back into distant history, certainly as far into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were a couple of interesting recipe books dating from the 1300s ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are not about the indian food that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich. During the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
