The History of Recipes

Academics have found proof that recipes existed way back into history, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel blissful and exhilarated.

Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef recounts how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many different herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, fennel and asafoetida.

In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices created an eruption in manuscripts on food, many of which are now in private collections.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site.
