The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be observed far back into the far past, certainly as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are some stone tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he recounts how the ancient cooks made use of many spices and herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, mint and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from the East, such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and spices led to an explosion in recipe books, many of which are kept safe in private collections. The TV revolution gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
