The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, these, early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient chefs used a wide range of herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example thyme, mint and dill. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to lay on the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
