The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be traced way back into distant history, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main meal and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef recounts how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, fennel and dill. Over the next few hundred years, the upper-class families of the West tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, testing, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cappuccino Mix recipe.
