The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to trace the history of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful.

Closer to modern times, we have two recipe books from the 14th Century : a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books are not about the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menus of the rich people of the time.

In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices caused a torrent in cookery books, some of which are now in private cookery archives.

During the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of the West competed to serve up the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading.
