The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existance of recipes back into distant history, in fact as far as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of interesting cookery books from the fourteenth century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books have no connection with the curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the nobility of those days. Over the following few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe tried to serve the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the 20th century, cooking books are increasing in popularity due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
