The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes back into history, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. He recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of spices, including some familiar names like basil, rue and dill. Over the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
