The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found way back into history, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were a couple of interesting books published in the 14th Century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these books have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the menus of the rich people of those days. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from the East, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an explosion in manuscripts on food, most of which are now in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
