The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes way back into antiquity, certainly as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main course and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. He also tells us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many spices and herbs, including some familiar names for example basil, mint and parsley. During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the 20th century, cookery books were highly popular mostly as a result of better eduction, more free time and having more disposable income. The revolution that is television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
