1 qt vanilla ice cream, softened
1 cup marachino cherries, chopped & drained
1 chocolate cookie crumb pie crust
8 chocolate covered cherries
1 whipped cream
Directions
Softened vanilla ice cream and add chopped marachino cherries, mix
thoroughly. Pour ice cream mixture into the pie shell. Freeze until
firm. Before serving garnish with whipped cream and chocolate covered
cherries.
I normally buy the half gallon size ice cream and make 2 pies. This
keeps well in the freezer.

The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed way back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. However, generally, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into starters, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also tells us how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many different spices, including some that we all recognise like thyme, fennel and dill. Closer to modern times, there were some books published in the fourteenth century - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are unconnected to the curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food cooked for the nobility of that period. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for an eruption in manuscripts on food, many of which are now in academic collections. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookery publications were greatly in demand as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased spare time and having more money. |
