The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes far back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Closer to modern times, we find a couple of books which date from the 14th Century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of food cooked for the nobility of the period. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookbooks are starting to become popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having more free time and having more money. |
