The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into the far past, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, we have a couple of recipe books dating from the fourteenth century - one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food eaten by the upper classes of the period. During the following few centuries, the powerful families of the West competed to lay on the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books are highly popular due to higher levels of literacy, people having more spare time and having more money. The revolution that is television brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
