The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed way back into antiquity, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, in the main part, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are some stone tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Closer to modern times, there were a couple of cookery books which date from the 14th Century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these have no connection with the curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the wealthy. During the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookery publications are highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, more free time and disposable income. |
