The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to trace the history of written cooking instructions back into antiquity, in fact as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, these, ancient cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. As we move into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into starters, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also informs us how the Roman chefs used many different aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as basil, mint and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in manuscripts on food, the majority of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
