The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked far back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find two interesting recipe books published in the fourteenth century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the rich and powerful. Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper classes tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes of the day. When we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were increasing in popularity as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and disposable income. The TV revolution gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Labrador Dinner recipe.
