The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes way back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, these, old records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Moving on, there are some interesting books which appeared in the 14th Century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of those days. During the following few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. However, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing recipes common in their social group. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
