The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, certainly as far into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. Moving on, there were a couple of interesting recipe books from the 1300s : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of food served to the upper classes of that period. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from Arab cooking, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices created an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. During the succeeding few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
