The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions way back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. However, these, early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient chefs used many different herbs and spices, including a few you will know for example thyme, mint and parsley. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab countries, including parsley and basil. These new culinary innovations prompted a torrent in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in academic collections. The arrival of TV brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
