The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be observed far back into the far past, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. In practice though, generally, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find a couple of cookery books which date from the 1300s - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are nothing to do with the spicy food that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals served to the nobility of that time. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new culinary innovations was responsible for a surge in manuscripts on cookery, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. The TV revolution gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
