The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of written cooking instructions back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, mostly, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Moving on, there are a couple of interesting books from the 1300s ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are not about the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menus of the nobility of the time. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as parsley and basil. These new foods and tastes created a torrent in books on cookery, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. During the following few centuries, the powerful families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the best banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. However, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
