The History of Recipes
We can read the history of written recipes way back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled some scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he describes how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also recounts how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today such as bay, fennel and dill. For the next few years, the rich families of Europe strove to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. The introduction of the TV brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
