The History of Recipes
We can track the history of meal recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, sadly, these old cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered, according to food historians are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. Later, we find a couple of interesting recipe books dating from the 14th Century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the upper classes of that period. For the centuries that followed, the families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most exotic banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe publications really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The introduction of the TV gave us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
