The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written recipes way back into history, at least as far back as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these early cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated and blissful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also describes how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many spices, including some familiar names such as thyme, rue and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in books on cooking, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections. The revolution that is television brings us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
