The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of recipes far back into history, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, these, ancient cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians is a collection of clay tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many different spices, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from Arab countries, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an eruption in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
