The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions far back into history, in truth as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we find a couple of books dating from the 1300s : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they have no connection with the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich. Over the next few centuries, the powerful and wealthy houses strove to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing popular recipes of the day. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cook books are greatly in demand due to more people being able to read, increased leisure time and having more money. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
