The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` far back into antiquity, at least as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he tells us how the Roman cooks made use of many different spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as bay, fennel and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from the East, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs caused an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The arrival of television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
