The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to follow the history of written cooking instructions far back into antiquity, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, generally, these old records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Moving on, we find a couple of interesting books published in the 1300s - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books have no connection with the curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared for the rich people of the time. During the following few centuries, the powerful and wealthy houses competed with each other to offer the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The revolution that is television gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
