The History of Recipes

We can read the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Later, there were two books published in the 14th Century ; a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are not about the indian food that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of meals cooked for the rich and wealthy people of the time.

During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that fine cookery and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books were starting to become popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and having more money to spend.

The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site.
