The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. In practice though, sadly, these old records were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were some books published in the 1300s ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and powerful of that time. Over the next few centuries, the upper classes strove to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Mexican Bake (Vegan) recipe.
