The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful. As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. He tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. He also informs us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example thyme, rue and asafoetida. Over the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cookery books were increasing in popularity mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and disposable income. The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Mexican Bake (Vegan) recipe.
