The History of Recipes
Historians have found proof that recipes existed back into ancient history, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, old cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for food preparation.
Closer to modern times, we have two interesting books which date from the fourteenth century ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals cooked for the nobility of those days. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an increase in manuscripts on food, most of which are now in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
