The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be found back into history, in fact as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are some interesting books which date from the 14th Century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared for the rich and wealthy people of that time. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new tastes created an eruption in manuscripts on cookery, some of which still exist in private libraries. Over the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of the West strove to offer the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. The TV revolution brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
