The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into ancient history, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, old cookbooks were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals were divided into starters, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few you will know like bay, fennel and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as basil and coriander. These new herbs and spices was responsible for a torrent in manuscripts on food, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. The arrival of television brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
