The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be found way back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, these, old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are some stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were a couple of books which were published in the 14th Century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals enjoyed by the wealthy. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the holy lands, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused an eruption in cookery books, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. Over the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to serve the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and recording the recipes of their peers. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
