The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `blissful`. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient chefs used many different aromatic flavors, including a few you will know for example thyme, mint and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from the East, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new spices and herbs led to an eruption in publications on food, most of which are now in private collections. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
