The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into history, in fact as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, sadly, these early recipes were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main course and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef tells us how the Roman cooks used a wide range of spices, including many that are still in use today like thyme, mint and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new culinary innovations created an increase in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which still exist in private collections. The introduction of the TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
