The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` back into distant history, in fact as far back as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. However, in the main part, these early cook books were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also recounts how the ancient cooks used a good variety of spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, mint and dill. During the following few centuries, the powerful families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the best banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it was during the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing popular recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
