The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, ancient recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, there were a couple of cookery books which date from the fourteenth century - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are nothing to do with the spicy food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich and powerful of that period. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the East, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations prompted a surge in books on cooking, most of which are kept safe in private collections. For the next few years, the rich and powerful families of the West competed to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this My Spanish Rice recipe.
